We aimed at presenting the current situation of avian influenza epidemic in our country. Poland has reported the occurrence of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N8, and to a lesser extent H5N5, as a part of large-scale epidemic that has recently threatened European countries. In a period between November 2016 and March 2017, the presence of HPAI virus was confirmed in Poland in 68 locations in wild birds, mostly in mute swans, and in 65 outbreaks in poultry (both commercial farms and backyard flocks), mostly in turkeys but also in geese, ducks and chickens. Phylogenetic studies provided evidence for separate introductions of genetically related virus variants from Asia to Europe. The clinical signs observed in poultry included depression, decreased feed and water intake, diarrhea, respiratory and nervous signs and, in layers, drop in egg production. Control measures, introduced basing on the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, mostly consisted on culling of infected flocks, sometimes extended to preventive culling in the surveillance zone, zoning, movement restrictions and implementations of strict biosecurity measures, including ban on the outdoor keeping of poultry. Beginning from March 2017, a significant reduction in the number of outbreaks has been observed. It can be explained by a decline in prevalence of HPAI virus in wild birds due to the development of flocks immunity that resulted in a decreased risk of influenza virus transmission to domestic birds.
