Streszczenia

The aim of this article was to present results of collaborative proficiency testing among laboratories performing investigations for trichinosis. Trichinosis in humans is caused by the parasitic roundworm Trichinella spiralis, due to the eating raw or undercooked meat of infected domestic or game animals. Investigation of fresh pork meat for trichinosis is among obligatory control measures. Trichinoscopy is routinely performed with the magnetic stirrer digestion method recognized as an effective tool for diagnostic procedure. The method is accepted as the international reference method and is based on enzymatic digestion of muscle tissue in an artificial digestion fluid prepared with pepsin and hydrochloric acid. Test sensitivity of the method is greatly influenced by the sample size, the kind of examined muscle and obviously – the personnel skills. All personnel involved in the examination of samples should participate in a quality control programs and a regular assessment of the testing, recording and analysis procedures used in the laboratory should be performed. Proficiency testing is an established instrument for quality assurance. It is also a proof for the laboratory competence. In this article we have presented results of proficiency testing organized by Polish National Reference Laboratory for 115 field laboratories in Greater Poland, endemic for Trichinella spp. During year 2016, in these collaborative trials 460 PT samples were examined and 26 laboratories failed examination (22.6%). In comparison to 2014, when 121 laboratories participated and 19 of them have failed (15.7%), the decrease in proficiency testing was found.
