This article aims at the presentation of current status of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) in EU. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), is an enveloped, ssRNA virus that belongs to the family Coronaviridae, genus Alphacoronavirus. It causes acute diarrhea with vomiting, dehydration and high mortality in neonatal piglets. The transmission of virus occurs via fecal-oral route. PED has been recognized for the first time in 1971 in United Kingdom. In 70. and 80., the virus spread to other European countries. In China, PEDV was detected in 1986. In 2010 new, highly virulent PEDV strain was isolated from outbreaks with up to 100% increase in deaths of piglets in China. The first outbreaks of the disease in US were confirmed in May 2013. Only to March 2015, the presence of PEDVwas confirmed in 33 States of America. As a result of an epidemic, the US pig industry has lost almost 10% of its domestic pig population (7 million pigs). Economic losses were significant. Two strains of PEDV have been identified. The original US PEDV strains from the initial outbreaks in 2013 were genetically closely related to the Chinese strains, isolated in 2011–2012. In late 2013, outbreaks of PEDV infection recurred in South Korea. Genetic and phylogenetican alyses showed that isolates from the outbreaks were most closely related to emergent US strains. In January 2014, PEDV isolates associated with high mortality were identified in Ukraine. In Germany, the presence of PEDV was confirmed in 2014 with mortality up to 70%. The presence of PEDV has also been confirmed in Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium and Austria. However, the Central European PEDV strains showed rather low virulence. Porcine epidemic diarrhea is not a notifiable disease in European Union and is not on the list of diseases reported to the World Animal Health Organization (OIE), therefore the status of this disease is not fully established yet.
