Ethoxyquin (EQ), is a quinolone which was commonly used as an antioxidant additive and a fungicide. EQ is the most effective antioxidant additive for protecting fishmeal during transport and storage, as well as food for companion animals. However, this compound has rised reasonable doubts regarding the safety of its use. Ethoxyquin was authorised in the EU as a feed additive for all animal species and categories until 2017, for its antioxidant properties. EFSA has issued two negative opinions due to insufficient data on the safety of EQ and its transformation products and to para-phenetidine, used for the synthesis of EQ. In June 2017, the European Commission suspended the authorisation of EQ as a feed additive for all animal species, (Regulation (EU) 2017/962).
