This article aims at the presentation of the procedures in limiting the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Poland. Forty-four months of Polish experiences with ASF have shown that the process of country release from ASFV can be a long-lasting trial. Today, it can be stated that the primary objective of the multidirectional efforts of institutions involved in ASF eradication program should be focused on the prevention of disease spread in both swine population and among wild boars. So far, none of these goals have been achieved. From the epizootic data collected by the veterinary service, it has been shown that the most common vector in ASF spread among pig holdings in Poland was green forage, hay and straw. The results of epizootic treatment, in this respect, differs fundamentally from the data presented by other countries. On the basis of data collected in Europe, it is generally accepted that the above-mentioned vectors are possible, however the real source of ASF spread in pig population remains unclear. Therefore, the most important measures in limitation and prevention of ASF remain proper procedures of utilization of infected animals carcasses along with well controlled disinfection. The following article presents the most important rules for farmers, veterinarians and owners of rendering plants dealing with utilization of ASFV infected carcasses of pigs and wild boars.
