This article aims at the presentation of preventive approaches in controlling equine herpesviral infections. Equine herpesviruses 1 and 4 (EHV1 and EHV4), are reported as major causative agents of respiratory diseases in horses. EHV1 is the major cause of equine viral abortion, encephalomyelitis and also respiratory disease (rhinopneumonitis). The latter, with accompanying neurological disorders varying from mild ataxia to enforced recumbency, is found mostly in foals and young horses. It may also cause neonatal foal death. EHV4 is a predominant cause of equine rhinopneumonitis and only occasionally may cause abortion. Clinical respiratory diseases caused by these two herpesviruses are manifested by cough, serous nasal discharge, mild conjunctivitis and fever. Their course is usually acute, treatment is symptomatic and not complicated, secondary infections seldom occur and prognosis is favorable. However, clinical picture is not pathognomonic thus the diagnosis of herpesvirus respiratory disease in horses requires laboratory assistance. Herpesviruses spread rapidly in susceptible horse population and this makes their control and elimination a real challenge.
