Streszczenia
This article aims at the presenting new data on the involvement of spiral organisms in porcine enteropathies. Porcine intestinal spirochaetes of the Brachyspira genus include strongly hemolytic B. hyodysenteriae and weakly haemolytic B. pilosicoli species. They are causative agents of diseases associated with significant production losses: swine dysentery and intestinal spirochetosis, respectively. The pathogenic potential of other Brachyspira species has not been investigated for many years. Currently, it was verified that at least three, strongly haemolytic species, namely B. hampsonii, B. suanatina, B. murdochii, may also cause colitis, macroscopically and clinically indistinguishable from swine dysentery. Routine diagnostic procedures include bacterial culture, based on hemolytic pattern, and genus-specific polymerase chain reaction, based on nox gene. Sequencing of the nox gene could potentially lead to discover new pathogenic species. The aim of this paper was to provide essential information about the etiopathogenesis, prevalence, diagnostic tools and treatment of other porcine enteropathies caused by newly recognised spirochaetes: B. hampsonii, B.suanatina and B. murdochii.
